Maker Profile: Kim Kingston of Hooray Truffles
Meet the Maker is an ongoing series that showcases up-and-coming designers, artists and creatives. Meet truffle maker Kim Kingston whose quest for eating to live resulted in a recipe for an organic, vegan dark chocolate truffle called Hooray.
Who are you and what do you design?
My name is Kim Kingston and I am the owner of Hooray Truffles. We are experts at making organic, vegan, soy free, fruit sweetened dark chocolate truffles.
Tell us a bit about how you got you to where you are today.
As a young girl in the 70’s and 80’s, I struggled with what was to later be labeled an “eating disorder”. Through my long journey to wellness and self-discovery, I tapped into an insatiable thirst for knowledge both spiritual and health related. Later, as a mother to two daughters, I vowed never to place the emphasis on food and to do everything in my power to help my girls avoid the “food struggles” and “body image” issues that had so plagued not only my young adult life but the lives of so many women around me.
At 12 years of age, my first born, Alanna, began to exhibit disordered eating behaviours. Behaviours that I recognized and knew well. During the ensuing years of Alanna’s journey to wellness, we met amazing mentors that were to forever change our outlook on life and ultimately change her path.
Our combined mother/daughter experience through the stronghold of disordered eating catapulted us into an entirely different mindset that embraced mindful eating, eating to live, healing your body through whole foods, plant based living, organic and non-GMO, and the important links between physical and emotional wellness and food: the undeniable mind/body connection. Alanna’s fire and passion to serve ignited her deep love of cooking and guided her into the arena of health coaching where "smart food" and "nutrient density" were key players.
Out of this cooking and living paradigm was born the recipe that was to become the business of Hooray, launched lovingly by the two of us.
If you could choose one word to describe your collection what would it be.
Morning routine? My morning is all about priming my brain for success and focus and so here is how it goes!!
- Hit the snooze button a few times.
- Rise, go to the bathroom.
- 20 - 30 minutes Vipassana meditation (depends on how many times I hit that snooze button!).
- Juice (carrot, beet, ginger, kale is my favourite and go-to juice)
- 13-minute sun salutation.
- Prepare for work and out the door I go!
Where do you find your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from many places. My own experience with plant based eating and living charges me beyond belief. My experience is that I feel so wonderful and have observed the healing properties of food within my own family that I simply want to share the message.
I believe so strongly in the quality and vibration of our chocolates and want to demonstrate to other women that one need not sacrifice good taste and good food and that there is a way to eat that is gentle on our own bodies and on our planet. Having a product as amazing as Hooray Truffles opens those doors to that conversation. Contributing to the Looking Glass Foundation drives me forward everyday as well as we as a family were touched by the struggles of eating disorders and understand from the core that the path to wellness is obtainable with support, love, and education.
Tell us about maintaining a balance. Do you?
Well, with a biz that I am so passionate about that is always an ongoing issue as I vacillate between balance and overwork. My morning routine is a priority for me and something that I really stick to - it keeps me grounded and balanced when everything else is crazy. Meditation is important for me as it calms my mind and helps me focus. For instance this weekend I am attending an all day silent meditation retreat and am so, so excited to have the time to go inward.
Is there a designer or brand with whom you’d love to collaborate?
Collaboration?! I love collaboration because I love synergy. There are so many amazing small businesses out there with people doing their own thing that is is fun and exciting to work together. We are so much more than our individual parts when we collaborate.
Hooray collaborates with a few other businesses at this time: Okanagan Pink Salt, Sunshine Coast Olive Oil Company, Salt Spring Island Coffee, Nutiva and we plan to keep this trend going for eternity! When we find other businesses that we align with in terms of values and mission it is a win win situation.
What advice would you give someone who is looking to launch their own business?
It’s a huge undertaking but if you have a passion and are committed, you can have, be and do whatever you wish. Educate yourself, start networking and talking about what you want to do and why you want to do it. That will put you into the vibration of what you want and you will be on your way. Have courage and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
What’s next for you?
