Artist Profile: Tobias Douglas of Hollow Tree Candles
An immense appreciation for Pacific Northwest forests and the stories and scents within them inspired this Whistler-based artist to create a collection of hand-poured coconut wax candles named after the Stanley Park icon. Meet Tobias Douglas of Hollow Tree.
Who are you and what do you design?
I’m Tobias Douglas and am the Founding Forester of Hollow Tree Candles!
Tell us about your journey as an artist.
The forest was where my passion for scent began. I grew up in nature, exploring and wandering the backcountry. And it was a natural progression for me to become a tree planter turned forester, as I love being in the wilderness. amongst the trees.
I started tree planting in the early 90's and was enchanted by the depths of a forest ecosystem; the science, the soils, the plants, the wildlife, the fungi, tree roots, micro and macro communities, and how everything functioned so poetically together.
I protested at Clayoquot Sound and this is where I discovered within myself that I wanted to learn - everything there was to know, socially, economically and politically about the forests of British Columbia.
I studied forestry and biology, and I worked throughout BC. I was mesmerized by the beauty of this Province. I would often ask myself, "how can I bottle this scent"?, or capture this vista? And so began the process of creating Hollow Tree!
If you could choose one word to describe your collection what would it be?
Where do you find your inspiration?
Within the Forests. The depth of beauty and diversity in British Columbia is truly profound. The diversity in our forests, the beauty of our flora and fauna, those moody temperate rainforests along the Pacific Northwest, the genetics of the rare sub-species Kermode Bears and Coastal Wolves, with endless access to the backcountry, we live in a magical and majestic Province.
Have you taken any risks to land where you are now?
I think, collectively, we all take risks to get here, to this place where we can be sassy entrepreneurs! And to be able to spread the love and joy of our passions.
Is there a designer or brand with whom you’d love to collaborate?
Gosh, I love the environment; the forests and its delicate ecosystems. I want to help by lending a voice to help provide a platform for the campaigns to 'Save BC Wolves' and to 'End the Grizzly Bear Trophy Hunt' in BC. Organizations like Pacific Wild and Wildlife Defence League are stalwarts in the campaign for positive change.
And I love trees, so I hope to inspire conversations through collaborations to - Learn To Speak Tree.
Looking ahead, what do you hope to accomplish?
Hollow Tree candles are a conduit in sharing the sights and scents of British Columbia. Tree ring by tree ring, Hollow Tree was created out of a love for British Columbia, a way for us - and for you to share the stories of ancient trees and astonishing seedlings, whether you visited the west coast forests yourself, or have only Experienced them in pictures and postcards.
I want to continue creating and sharing stories of the forests and flora of the Pacific Northwest, to indulge your senses with the storms of Tofino or the mists of Shannon Falls. To pay homage to the history of BC through the imperial scents of Amor de Cosmos and Gold Rush.
I hope to continue to build the brand of Hollow Tree whilst spreading the message of conservation and history. Hollow is about evoking conversation, and inspiring people to experience this place; the Pacific Northwest.
Forest are libraries, share their stories, let your adventure begin, take a hike in the backcountry, walk on forest floors, dance barefoot in the rain, love the wilderness, love where you live and learn to speak tree...
