Artist Profile: Levi Gogolinski of Loper & Haas
The best kind of leather is like your favourite pair of jeans, evolving and aging with you to tell the story of a life well-lived. Meet the Vancouver-based designer behind the handcrafted line of leather goods, Loper & Haas.
Who are you and what do you design?
Hi! I'm Levi, and I'm the designer and maker behind the handcrafted leather goods of Loper & Haas.
Tell us about your journey as an artist.
I've always had an artistic streak, and have been drawing and painting back as far as I can remember. I took visual art in university, but when I graduated in 2011, I wasn't sure if painting was where I saw myself long term. I started Loper & Haas very shortly after that.
If you could choose one word to describe your collection what would it be?
Where do you find your inspiration?
I like making pieces that have a purpose, so I often get inspired to create something out of necessity. I really enjoy making functional pieces that are also timeless and beautiful.
Have you taken any risks to land where you are now?
Absolutely! It would be pretty amazing to start a company or business without some level of risk, but you also learn a lot by jumping both feet in.
Is there a designer or brand with whom you’d love to collaborate?
I would love to collaborate with a ceramic artist or a woodworker like Kate Duncan or the girls from Halsion Collective.
Looking ahead, what do you hope to accomplish?
I'm hoping to be able to take some time after Christmas to design some new pieces for 2018 - I'll keep a lot of the core pieces, but it's always fun to switch things up and keep progressing.
